A Beautiful Partnership Built on Love, Trust & Purpose

At Northern Heart Standards, every dog in our program is deeply loved, intentionally raised, and treasured as family. From the very beginning, our heart has never simply been about breeding beautiful dogs — it has been about raising companions that bring healing, joy, comfort, and connection into the lives of others.

Because our dogs mean so much to us, we believe they deserve more than a kennel environment or a life spent rotating through breeding spaces. They deserve couches to curl up on, children to grow alongside, daily adventures, bedtime snuggles, and families who adore them as their own.

At the same time, in order to preserve and continue improving the quality, health, temperament, and structure of our lines, we thoughtfully retain select dogs in our breeding program. The way we are able to do this while still prioritizing the emotional and physical wellbeing of every dog is through our Guardian Home Program.

Our Guardian Home families become an extension of the Northern Heart family. Together, we work hand in hand to give these exceptional dogs the very best life possible — one filled with love, stability, purpose, and connection.

What Is a Guardian Home?

A Guardian Home is a carefully selected forever family for one of our breeding-quality dogs.

The dog lives full time with their Guardian Family as a beloved pet while Northern Heart Standards retains breeding rights for a limited period of time. During those years, we work together as partners to ensure the dog remains healthy, happy, and successful within our program.

For many families, this becomes an incredibly rewarding experience. Guardian families often receive one of our top pick puppies or young adults without the traditional purchase cost, while also becoming part of something meaningful and purposeful alongside our program.

Most importantly, the dogs themselves benefit most of all — growing up in loving homes where they are cherished every single day.

Our Philosophy

We believe breeding dogs deserve extraordinary lives.

That means they should know what it feels like to belong completely to a family. They should experience love, routine, affection, vacations, holidays, and all the little moments that make a house feel like home.

Our Guardian Program allows us to responsibly continue our program while ensuring every dog receives individualized attention, emotional connection, and a beautiful quality of life.

This program is truly centered around partnership, communication, and mutual trust. We are incredibly intentional about the families we welcome into this part of our program because these dogs remain forever a part of our hearts.

During Their Time in Our Program

While in our breeding program, Northern Heart Standards remains responsible for all breeding-related decisions and expenses, including health testing, reproductive care, breeding arrangements, and whelping support.

Guardian Families simply continue loving and caring for the dog as they would any cherished family pet — providing normal day-to-day puppy and dog care including love, exercise, grooming, routine veterinary care, guidance, structure, and a safe home environment.

For females, there will be periods of time where she returns to us for delivery and raising her puppies before returning home to her family once her puppies are weaned. For males, breeding needs are generally much shorter and arranged as needed.

Once the dog has completed their role within our program, we cover the spay or neuter and full ownership is officially transferred to the Guardian Family permanently.

Is a Guardian Home Right for You?

Guardian Homes are best suited for families who are flexible, communicative, loving, and excited to be part of something bigger than themselves.

It is important to understand that this is not simply a “free puppy” program. It is a partnership built on kindness, trust, communication, and reasonable flexibility during the dog’s time in our program.

We strive to make the experience positive, supportive, and manageable for our families while always prioritizing the wellbeing of the dogs we all love so deeply.

For the right family, becoming a Guardian Home can be an incredibly special and rewarding experience.

Guardian Home Guidelines

To be considered for our Guardian Home Program, families should:

• Live within approximately 90 minutes of Plainwell, Michigan (49080)
• Be willing to communicate and coordinate with us throughout the dog’s time in our program
• Provide a loving, stable, indoor family home
• Be able to provide normal puppy and dog care responsibilities
• Maintain regular grooming and general coat maintenance
• Have reasonable flexibility for scheduled health testing, breeding, or whelping needs
• Provide a safe and secure environment for the dog
• Be committed to loving and caring for the dog as a permanent member of the family
